COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
PACKING MATERIAL
(PLASTIC)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this
Commercial Item Description, for all Federal agencies.
1. SCOPE AND CLASSIFICATION
1.1 Scope. This commercial item description covers plastic packing material for use with flanged connections, tanks, pump housings, valve stems and faucets used with petroleum derivate handling equipment.
1.2 Classification. Packing material shall be of the following types and sizes:
Type I- (Deleted), (use MIL-P-24377 for braided asbestos packing).
Type II- Plastic (virgin ptfe); solid type, without covering, lubrication or friction treatment.
Size- 1- 5/32 inch diameter (0.396 cm)
Size- 2- 1/4 inch diameter (0.635 cm)
2. SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS
2.1 Type II. Shall be constructed from twisted or extruded virgin, unsintered polytetrafluoroethylene (ptfe) resin, without covering, lubrication or friction or friction treatment. Furnished in nominal cross-sectional diameters of 5/32 (0.396 cm) or 1/4 (0.635 cm) inch, as specified, 25 feet (7.62 meters) in length (minimum). The packing material shall be furnished in a self-dispensing can or box.
