MIL-DTL-3533C
3.5.1.1 Finish and trimming. Mold flash shall be removed in such a manner that the pieces
conform to the requirements specified herein and on the applicable drawing or Military Standard.
3.5.1.2 Sealing surfaces. Sealing surfaces shall be smooth and free from all defects,
blemishes, or irregularities except as permitted on the applicable drawing or Military Standard.
Inspection shall be visual and without magnification in accordance with MIL-STD-413. The entire
surface of the O-Ring is considered as a sealing surface.
3.5.2 O-Rings. Any method used to trim mold flash from O-Rings shall not remove any of
the original molded finish of the ring. Unless specifically stated otherwise, the cross sectional
dimensions of the flash remaining after trimming shall not exceed .003 inch (.076 mm) radially
and .005 inch (.127 mm) circumferentially (or laterally).
3.5.3 Minor surface defects. Minor surface defects that do not affect serviceability of the
material shall not be cause for rejection.
3.6 Identification.
3.6.1 Sheet and strip. Unless otherwise specified in the contract or order, sheet material
shall be marked in accordance with MIL-STD-190 and also to show the specification number,
type and grade, date of manufacture (by calendar quarters) and the manufacturer's code
identification and compound number. The identification shall appear in rows of constantly
recurring symbols from one end of the sheet to the other, spaced approximately 5 inches (127
mm) apart. The manufacturer's code identification and compound number shall appear
immediately below the specification number. The symbol shall be clearly legible and not less
than .25 inch (6.35 mm) high and shall be applied by using a marking fluid that is not deleterious
to the rubber. The marking shall not be obliterated by normal handling nor by the action of
lubricating oil.
3.6.2 Molded shapes. When the size of the product permits, the identifying symbol, as in
3.6.1, shall be marked once on each part.
3.6.3 Small parts. Where material dimensions are such that markings cannot be made in
accordance with the above, markings shall appear on the container only.
3.7 Workmanship. Workmanship shall be of a quality to assure the materials comply with
the requirements of this specification.
